Happy Thanksgiving from Soap Box Derby! Our office will be closed Thursday and Friday. We are thankful for our partners, donors, and racers who have kept Soap Box Derby alive for more than 85 years! Who are you thankful for this Thanksgiving?
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Caiden Clements of Indianapolis, IN, a beloved member of Derby Nation. At the age of 17, Caiden touched the lives of many with his passion, enthusiasm, and unwavering spirit off and on the track.

Caiden was not only an exceptional racer but also a friend and a beacon of positivity within the community. His dedication to the sport and his infectious energy will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Caiden was a two time All-American Champ.

We will forever hold Caiden in our thoughts and remember him as a remarkable racer and an exceptional individual.
Can I ask you a question? The ISBD staff wants to know what is your favorite memory you have made while at Derby Downs. Share below for a chance to be featured in future posts!
Good Morning Derby Nation! The Soap Box Derby HQ will be closed in the morning! Our staff will be volunteer at Open M, a local food pantry. We will reopen in the afternoon.
Looking to store your car or motorcycle for the winter? We have 3 spaces open but they won't last long! Give us a call at 330.733.8723 for more details and rates.
We salute the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for our freedom. Let's take a moment to express our gratitude to those who have worn the uniform and defended our nation. Your courage and commitment inspire us all.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of an outstanding member of our Soap Box Derby family. Butch Mitchell, a dedicated and passionate volunteer who poured his heart into the Soap Box Derby, has sadly passed away. He was born on April 14th, 1941.

Butch was not just a volunteer; he was an integral part of the derby community. He started racing and volunteering in the 50's. His unwavering commitment, dedication, and love for our racers touched the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Butch's proudest moments were when his daughter, Candy, raced starting in 1985 and attended the All-American World Championships in 1988.

We will forever cherish the countless memories of Butch Mitchell cheering on our young racers and sharing Soap Box Derby history with them during Race Week through photos, storytelling and newspaper articles. The Blue Building will never be the same without Butch.
🎃👻🏁 Happy Halloween from SBD HQ!👻🎃🏁

Boo! Ghouls and gals, it was a spooktacular showdown at the HQ office today! In one corner, we had the frightful Pumpkin Head, and in the other, the spooky Ghost! Congratulations to the Ghost for this ghostly victory, and a round of applause for the valiant effort from Pumpkin Head!

Show us your Halloween costumes in the comments below!
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of John Peter (JP) Fedele, former race director of the Madison, Wisconsin Soap Box Derby and active volunteer for the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby since 1982.

Fedele was inducted into the 2023 Soap Box Derby Hall of Fame.

He became race director in Madison in 1981, and served as director or assistant director until 2016. During many of those years, he also volunteered with the Racine race and, he coordinated sending the Madison local champs and their winning cars to compete in Australia. He served as a member of the All-American Soap Box Derby's A-Team from 1986 through 2023, assisting in many technical activities such as inspecting and weighing race cars, testing cars' brake systems and working in the run-out area and returning cars to Topside.
Looking for a sign to start racing? Well, THIS is IT! As Brianna Wadlron said "Derby is not for any specific clique, I would say. There's so many different aspects. I know rock stars that are racing. I know high school scholars. You know, there's so many different types of kids that are racing. And that's what the beauty about derby is, is that anyone can do it."
